Hey all,
Should have checked the backlash on the pinions BEFORE I ran my brand new e-Savage...lesson learned!
Can anyone tell me if the 82019 Spur Gear 66T is the same as any of the other HPI part numbers (from other trucks)?
Something that my LHS would have in stock.
Thanks,

I think they mount the same as the other Savages, but are either a finer pitch, and /or smaller in size... What a pain...Sorry , man.
I resisted temptation and pulled down my gearbox, and greased it with Tamiya Ceramic grease, to be sure... but i should check the diff shimming, too.....

Yeah I know, it kind of sucks that I didn't take the 30 min. to pull the gearbox and check adjustment.
It seems that I'm not the only one though! Everyone is Out of Stock on the spur gear. I finally found some at Hobby People and bought 2 of them (just in case!).
How do you check the diff shimming?

...FYI a Savage spur wont work...The EP has a 32 pitch and the GP is whats called Module 1...They LOOK very similar but cant be used with each other...I put an E-sav on the hellfire but it wont work the other way round
...BASICALLY, and I hope Kosta can add to this, you dont want any 'sideways' movement in your diffs...You want them to sit 'securely' i their groves and not have much 'play' in directions that they arent supposed to move in...You want all gears to 'roll' smoothly and not require any 'extra force' to get them to move...Think of the feeling of a HOT knife going through COLD butter...Thats a nice feeling for diffs...

Got it...that's what I thought.

What size and which spur gear and pinion gears would I have to get to put the hv-maxx in the e-savage. Is that all i would have to change?

you may use the stock spur gear for use with almost any motor...
you will need 32p pinions if you will be using the stock spur gear...
for the hvmaxx you will need a 32p 18t pinion to start with...
and i would suggest that you won`t be using the hv-maxx at all...

...stick with the stock spur...great little beast that keeps on ticking WHATEVER you do to it...
...Agree with Kosat's recommondation on the 18...Remember that Robinson Racing pinions may be easier to get and they have a pretty good selection of smaller sizes too; 16's and 15's...

Whoa, wait a minute, the GP Savage spur is Mod 1? I ask because I purchased a Feigao 9L and it came with the 5mm shaft. 5mm Mod 1 pinions are a lot easier to find and cheaper than 5mm 32p pinions.
Is the general consensus that if you stick with a stock spur gear, an 18T pinion is the way to go for brushless?

just buy standard 32p pinions and drill them out to 5mm bore...
you will need to be carefull though...
anyway, most spur gears in nitro MTs are mod1....

no,not by any means. stock spur and 18t pinion is only recommended for hv-maxx along with the stock wheels...
with the feigao 9L, same spur and wheels, you would normally want to start with a 20-21t pinion...

Er, that would presume that I had a drill press. Something tells me that I don't want to try this procedure with a pair of vice grips in one hand and a cordless drill in the other. :)

Ah, bummer. I can find 18T 5mm pinions, 20-21T have been harder. Perhaps it's time to buy that drill press... :)

lol!
actually it isn`t that difficult -provided that you have a good drill bit set...
use some grippy pliers to hold the pinion on the table [you don`t mind if the table gets a hole drilled, do you? lol], then drill progressively...
3.2mm is the stock bore...so start drilling with 3.5mm NOT with 5mm at once...
then proceed to 4mm,4.5mm and then 5mm...
it really isn`t as difficult as it sounds...

...check Starluck's or RC Monster...They have a couple of 5mm pinions, usually quite low tooth counts though...
